Rod was honored to be Emcee for PCL's (Poole Construction Limited) 100th birthday celebration. This yearly celebration has become a traditional gathering for all PCL subcontractors and supporters and also serves as a fundraiser for charity.
Children's Response Center has been the benefactor of the charity for the last decade. PCL is particularly proud to sponsor Children's Response Center because of the positive impact they have when a child is abused or assaulted. The Center benefits in numerous ways. PCL adopts a family from the Center at Christmas, they sponsor the Center's annual "To Heal a Child's Heart" fundraising luncheon, and for the last five years they have received funds from the PCL Casino Night. The Casino night is an elaborate event where guests purchase fake money to trade at the gaming tables, enabling them to win or bid on door prizes throughout the evening. It is a fully hosted event from the wonderful food to spirits, and including a cab ride home if necessary. With this year's crowd lively, Rod was challenged to host over the joyous noise. With an elevated voice over a hand-cupped microphone, he managed to bring good laughs to the room for 15 minutes of comedy in between the gambling and the prizes. In case PCL sounds familiar but you can't quite remember where from, begin with the skyline of Seattle or think about where you have traveled to. PCL has left their footprint coast to coast and on the skyline of every major city in Canada before spreading operations into the US. Odds are you have admired many of their completed works locally and abroad and didn't know it was PCL who put it all together. In 1975 they entered the US marketplace, building Colorado Square in Colorado Springs first, then they moved into Denver in 1978. They proceeded east and south until moving into the Seattle market in 1992. Here in Seattle it began with residential buildings, the first high rise downtown condo, one Pacific Tower, and then the Ellington condominiums, and IDX Tower. Next they took on the challenges of the Key Arena remodel, the Terminal 30 Cruise ship terminal, Bell Harbor Pier, and the Convention Center. The SeaTac air traffic control tower rendered inoperable by an earthquake was rebuilt by PCL. Spreading further around the western region, the Seattle office was awarded and completed contracts for the Everett Events Center as well as structures locally in Bellevue, Kent, Auburn and across state lines in Oregon, Idaho, California, Montana and Hawaii. Skyscrapers, airport terminals, dams, mines, refineries, bridges, oil platforms, event centers, sports arenas... one of a kind or never done before construction are their specialties and it seems anything you can think of they would be capable of making happen. No matter where you travel across America from the Staples Center to Universal Studios Orlando to Mount Rushmore to Mall of America to the Hawaii Convention Center, PCL is leaving it's indelible mark here as it did in Canada. After 100 years the list of accomplishments is too long to mention. Rod was proud to be part of this year's celebration, especially honoring the 100th milestone. Thank you to the committee who organized the event and a special thank you to Dawn Daurie, Rod's focal for this celebration. | Special Guests:
